Member Spotlight: Scratch Bakery

Member Spotlight,

Our Member Spotlights are a great way to learn more about different Retail Alliance members and their businesses. Twice a month, we feature different members to highlight their accomplishments and everything they do for the community. We hope you enjoy getting to know our members better through these spotlights!

If you’re interested in being featured in a future Member Spotlight, please fill out this form. In the meantime, enjoy learning the story behind a Scratch Bakery. They have one location in Hampton and one in Newport News, and both are owned and operated by Lashonda Sanford.

What is Scratch Bakery?

Scratch Bakery is your neighborhood bakery where we specialize in making things from scratch. You can come into our bakery and get the dessert that your grandma use to make like sour cream pound cake, pineapple upside-down cake, bread pudding, and banana pudding.

How did you get started with your business?

I made my daughter’s 2nd birthday cake. It was an Elmo cake and everyone asked me who made the cake! I explained that it was homemade by me and my husband, and the rest was history!

What have been some of your business challenges and how have you dealt with them?

We have had some difficulty maintaining employees. Keeping the ones that have been there for a while and getting new employees. Also finding supplies has been challenging.

What has been your greatest business success?

My greatest success has been being on national television on the Food Network and coming in top five on the Holiday Baking Championship Show.

How do you stay connected to your community?

We try to stay connected on social media. We also like to bring our mobile cupcake truck to the community.

What advice do you have for others looking to start their own business?

You just have to have due diligence you cannot give up even when it gets hard, you can do it! There is going to be challenges that come but what matters is what you do with those challenges, and how you come out of that challenge!
