Local Norfolk man and 32 year wardrobe consultant, opens first menswear store in MacArthur Center

Norfolk, VA: August 17, 2022: With a desire to become a household name in Hampton Roads and to give back to those in need, Norfolk native Bernardo Johnson has the experience and passion to make it happen with his new Bernardo’s Mens Wear clothing store. A ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening will be held on August 18, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. on Level 1, MacArthur Center, 300 Monticello Avenue, Norfolk, VA, 23510 with Norfolk Mayor, Kenneth Alexander, in attendance.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have the opportunity to have the space of this magnitude. My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been fair and to be able to have my first store in my hometown where I was born and raised and now my last store in my hometown, I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to be able to dress the citizens of the place I call home,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s passion for men’s clothing started in 1988 when his aunt introduced him to Robert Blair, who owned four clothing stores in the Adam’s Morgan section of Washington D.C. Since 1990, Johnson has worked as a wardrobe consultant providing customers with business and business casual, evening, and special events attire. Under Blair’s mentorship, Johnson learned how to purchase clothing directly from the manufacturer while watching his mentor purchase clothing from middle to high-end clothing shows.

Leading up to the opening of his new business venture, Johnson struggled with a lack of capital and inventory. He overcame his lack of business capital thanks to the help of family and friends. He also overcame the lack of inventory thanks to trade routes re-opening from the decline of COVID-19.

Johnson stated, when asked what advice he would give to those wanting to start their own business, “Follow your heart and understand that much is given and much is required.” Following his own advice has served him well.
